Meet Scott—person with type 1 diabetes (T1D) of 53 years, energetic father, grandfather and favorite funcle!

What inspired you to join the team?

I wanted to let other T1D’s know you can achieve anything you desire. I’m a 67-year-old T1D with a 50 year Journey award from Lilly and a Joslin Diabetes Center 50 year award.

What’s in your diabetes management toolkit?

Fiasp insulin, my pump, reservoirs, infusion sets, Guardian sensors, tapes, glucometer, glucagon and glucose tabs.

I never go on a run without …

Glucometer, glucose tabs and Honey Stinger energy gels (thank you Mary for enlightening me!)

What is your favorite low snack on a run?

Honey Stinger energy gels.

What is your pump it up running song?

Anything from the 80’s.

What has been your most helpful tool as you’ve trained?

Gear S2 watch and Strava.

What has been the biggest training hurdle?

Old age!

What is your most embarrassing running moment?

When I got lost on a reservoir loop trail, my phone died, my watch died and I ended up walking an extra 10 miles before I recognized my location.

The injury I’m currently nursing is . . .

Knee pain.

If you could go on a run with any T1D hero who would it be?

Bret Michaels.

How do you treat yourself / recover after a long run?

A large cold brew Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee.

What are you most nervous about the day of the marathon?

The temperature being too cold.

How are you going to celebrate at the end of the race?

Celebrate the start of my 54th year with T1D on 11/12/2018!
