Miami, Florida, USA

For decades, Miami has been known as a hot spot, with its beautiful sunny beaches and great weather year-round.

Miami has expanded its culture into several new neighborhoods, many of which are highlighted below. Downtown has been rejuvenated with the Design District, Midtown and Wynwood neighborhoods. Historic Coconut Grove and Coral Gables – home of the palm-tree-lined University of Miami main campus and the gorgeous Biltmore Hotel – also have plenty to offer visitors and locals alike. As an active working mom of two, the youngest of which has T1D, I feel especially blessed to call Miami’s tropical paradise home for the past 25 years. Together we are always finding ways to take advantage of all the beauty of this diverse city – from outdoor activities to exploring all the incredible dining experiences, night life and culture. Here are just a few of my favorite things to do in this fabulous city.

There is no shortage of diverse and excellent restaurants in Miami. Below are two of my favorites:

Located in the heart of Downtown Miami inside the Epic Hotel, Zuma offers contemporary Japanese cuisine in a fun and vibrant environment. Make a reservation as it is always crowded! Zuma also offers an excellent Sunday Brunch.

Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink is located in Miami’s Design District. Chef Michael Schwartz offers a farm-to-table American bistro at this signature restaurant, including a top-rated Sunday Brunch. The food is always expertly prepared and the atmosphere is laid back and local. Reservations are highly recommended.

With all the excellent restaurant options, it’s no surprise that Miami also offers many choices for how to burn off all those calories! One of my new favorite activities is sweating it out at Bikram Hot Yoga Miami, located in Coconut Grove with a second location in Doral. Each 90-minute class takes beginners to advanced yoga students, with an instructor helping you sweat, sweat and sweat through 26 different poses, where afterward you feel relaxed and at peace.

There is an abundance of spas in South Florida, but my personal favorite is Eména Spa, an upscale day spa in the Miami Design District. Eména offers a variety of specialty beauty services, from laser hair removal, waxing, injections, facials, massages, salon services and mani/pedis. With long hours and open daily, this spa makes it easy to leave your packed schedule behind and meet all of your pampering needs. The staff is phenomenal and the treatments luxurious!

Art Basal stages the world’s premier modern and contemporary art fairs in Miami annually in early December. People from all over the globe attend the various events and galleries on Miami Beach and in the Miami Design District – it’s the place to be and be seen. For year round art and culture, the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), a contemporary art museum close to downtown, is where you should go. In addition to art exhibitions, PAMM offers numerous weekly social events, including family oriented programs, such as family movie nights and art storytelling for children.

Weekdays, head to the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI), the world leader in cure-focused research, which is based in Miami and is located at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine.  Housed within the DRI is the Kosow Diabetes Treatment Center, which provides comprehensive medical treatment and diabetes education to individuals and families living with diabetes. Both T1D adults and children should call Gary Kleiman, the Senior Director of Medical Development at the DRI at (305) 243-3899, and he or his assistant Aimee will happily guide you to the right location or assist as needed.

If it is after hours/weekends, adults with T1D should go to the University of Miami Hospital ER.  Their address is 1400 N.W. 12th Avenue, Miami, FL (in Downtown) and ER telephone is (305) 689-5464.

If you are further south, Baptist Hospital ER, located at 8900 N. Kendall Drive, Miami (786) 596-6556, is your more convenient ER option.

For after-hours emergencies for T1D children, I recommend Nicklaus Children’s Hospital ER  which is located at 3100 SW 62nd Avenue, Miami, FL (305) 668-5522.

Try CVS (8765 South Dixie Highway, Miami (305) 740-6840, or Walgreens 5731 Bird Road, Miami (305) 666-0757.
