En un <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2100165\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">art&iacute;culo publicado recientemente<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> por el Diario de Medicina de Nueva Inglaterra, los resultados del ensayo cl&iacute;nico TODAY muestran que los ni&ntilde;os y los j&oacute;venes diagnosticados con diabetes Tipo 2 experimentan complicaciones a largo plazo cuando llegan a la edad adulta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De 2004 a 2011, los investigadores hicieron un ensayo cl&iacute;nico multic&eacute;ntrico para evaluar la efectividad de tres tratamientos:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformina<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformina m&aacute;s rosiglitazona (TZD)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformina m&aacute;s una intervenci&oacute;n intensiva en el estilo de vida<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despu&eacute;s del ensayo, se hizo un estudio de seguimiento durante 9 a&ntilde;os desde 2011 a 2020 y los participantes del estudio pasaron a la metformina e insulina o solo a la metformina. En 2020, con una edad promedio de los participantes de 26 a&ntilde;os y una duraci&oacute;n promedio de la diabetes Tipo 2 de alrededor de 13 a&ntilde;os, hubo complicaciones. El estudio demostr&oacute; lo siguiente:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">el 67.5 por ciento desarroll&oacute; hipertensi&oacute;n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">el 51.6 por ciento desarroll&oacute; dislipidemia (niveles anormales de colesterol y otros l&iacute;pidos)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">el 54.8 por ciento desarroll&oacute; una enfermedad renal diab&eacute;tica<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">el 32.4 por ciento desarroll&oacute; una enfermedad nerviosa (neuropat&iacute;a)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De 2010 a 2011, la prevalencia de enfermedades de la retina, incluyendo las etapas m&aacute;s avanzadas, salt&oacute; del 13.7 por ciento al 51 por ciento entre 2017 y 2018. Tambi&eacute;n en este per&iacute;odo de seguimiento, el 60 por ciento de los participantes tuvo una complicaci&oacute;n y el 28 por ciento tuvo dos complicaciones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los j&oacute;venes y los ni&ntilde;os de color tuvieron m&aacute;s probabilidades de experimentar complicaciones, como hipertensi&oacute;n y dislipidemia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>M&aacute;s sobre el estudio TODAY<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El estudio de TODAY se propuso determinar si tres enfoques de tratamiento diferentes reducir&iacute;an la resistencia a la insulina en ni&ntilde;os y adolescentes, prolongar&iacute;an el manejo gluc&eacute;mico, lo que incluir&iacute;a retrasar el deterioro de las c&eacute;lulas beta y reducir los riesgos de complicaciones relacionadas con la diabetes.
