Every year, the American Diabetes Association’s summer camps give thousands of children the opportunity to make life-changing connections with other kids with type 1 diabetes. This year, Imagine Camp went virtual, offering campers the chance to stay connected and safe during COVID-19.

Imagine Camp included a weekly speaker series that took place all throughout summer and was co-produced by the ADA and Beyond Type 1 and hosted by Rob Howe. The series, “Imagine Spotlights,” featured conversations with impressive individuals living with diabetes, serving as a weekly dose of inspiration and fun experience for campers and their families at home. The series featured interviews with the likes of

Gavin Lewis, star of Little Fires Everywhere and Prince of Peoria, spoke about his diagnosis and navigating life with type 1 diabetes (T1D) as an actor

 

Dave Holmes, former MTV VJ and current Esquire magazine Editor at Large, shared about his initial misdiagnosis and how he adjusted to life as a T1D

 

QiQi Drew, singer, T1D advocate and founder of nonprofit The Anchor Holds, discussed finding her tribe of others and shared about overcoming diabulimia

 

Victor Garber, film, television and stage actor, spoke about advances in T1D treatments and tech, and his special connection to diabetes camp

 

Nate Checketts, CEO and Co-Founder of Rhone and Chairman of BT1’s Board of Directors, shared his getting to know the T1D community including Beyond Type 1 and talked fatherhood as a T1D

 

Tracey Brown, CEO of the ADA and a person with type 2 diabetes (T2D), fired up campers with an exciting chat about all that the ADA is currently working on and the journey following her diabetes diagnosis

 

Gary Forbes, the last athlete to play in the NBA with T1D, shared about his journey to playing professionally and what it’s like to play around the world

 

Kendall Simmons, former NFL player and Super Bowl winner, engaged campers with an inspiring talk about the power of positivity and perseverance, especially when it comes to T1D

 

Kaleb, Henry, Chase + Angus, a group of best friends living with T1D, shared what makes it cool to have others you can talk to who just get it and how they bond over gaming
