ONE: The Ultimate Conference & Retreat for Adults with Type 1

 2017-06-21

Taking Control Of Your Diabetes, or known around the world as simply TCOYD, began in 1995 and since then has been transforming the way people live with diabetes by encouraging them to take a more active roll in their condition through education, motivation, empowerment and humor. Over the past two plus decades TCOYD has perfected the art of reaching people from all walks of life and has become the world leader in diabetes education.

2017 has been a year of serious growth for TCOYD with an increased ability to reach even more people affected by diabetes. TCOYD will reach every corner of the country this year, from Santa Clara to Raleigh, and from Hawaii to St. Louis by bringing their flagship event, the best diabetes conference … ever, to the doorstep of so many great American cities. At the close of 2017, TCOYD will have hosted a total of 440 programs and events since 1995 and there is absolutely no sign of slowing down.

As TCOYD continues to develop their unique in-person experience, the next generation of what it means to be part of the TCOYD family will emerge in late June of this year. ONE: The Ultimate Conference & Retreat for Adults with type 1 will take place June 23rd-25th in San Diego and was born out the very same passion that drove the first TCOYD event in 1995. Steve Edelman M.D., the founder and director of TCOYD, wanted to offer the diabetes community more. More opportunities to educate themselves and to truly feel they are part of a much larger community, sharing a common characteristic that unites them. Along with co-director Jeremy Pettus M.D., they sought to build from the TCOYD DNA and develop an event that would transform the way you live with diabetes.

When the initial idea for ONE was born, TCOYD wanted to motivate people in every possible way and bring together type 1s from all over the world to connect, bond and learn from one another. With an all-star cast of speakers and topics confirmed, TCOYD set out to create the ultimate weekend event. So many type 1s fondly remember attending diabetes summer camps along with the pranks and shenanigans that went along with it. Those stories always bring a smile and laughter to the face of anyone telling them and that remains the true inspiration for the ONE event.

The design of ONE was intended to create a space where adult type 1s could have the time of their lives with people who totally get one another in an adult diabetes camp setting. TCOYD replaced the bunk beds and bugs with luxury rooms and fancy drinks and dropped it in a resort in sunny San Diego. Attendees will begin each day with the activity of their choice: jogging, walking, tai chi, yoga, or simply lounging around after breakfast with new friends and old. Throughout the day people will be free to attend multiple lectures and workshops from leading, world renowned experts in diabetes all while surrounded by palm trees, pools, ocean breezes and engulfed by the sweet smell of jasmine in the air. The end of each day will culminate with hoppin’ nightlife featuring a luau with fire dancers and a roasted pig as well as a taco night with live music and of course, enough booze to keep everyone happy.

An event of this magnitude has never been attempted before and it is guaranteed to knock your socks off. You can find more on that in the sex, insulin and rock n’ roll session at ONE! The ONE event lives and breathes by what it means to be part of the TCOYD family and the bigger type 1 community. In addition to re-living your diabetes camp memories in a uniquely different setting and making friends for life through awesome education and social experiences, ONE will do what TCOYD has always sought to do … give you the freedom to have fun, take control and be yourself.

There are only a few spots left for ONE but this is not to be missed. Come on down to San Diego and join the TCOYD family in paradise June 23 – 25.
