Type 1 diabetes in the United Kingdom

The UK is made up England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales and its citizens utilize the NHS (National Health Service) for their medical needs. Each respective country has their own offshoot of the NHS but all offer universal, public healthcare. Day to day, patients are seen by GPs (general practitioners) and pay for very few of their prescriptions, and prices are kept low in an effort to maintain one of the world’s best examples of truly socialized medicine.

According to recent reports, about 4.7 million people in the UK live with diabetes and by 2025, it is estimated that more than five million people will have diabetes, with type 1 accounting for approximately 8-10 percent of all cases. Understanding the healthcare system in place and having helpful resources is crucial to navigating life with diabetes.
