Awareness of the signs of type 1 diabetes saves lives. Type 1 diabetes can strike anyone at any age. At diagnosis of type 1, approximately 46 percent of patients are in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in the United States. DKA is a life-threatening condition that can occur from a delayed diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. This is a solvable problem and an issue where awareness can make a meaningful difference.
Our signs of type 1 diabetes awareness campaign was launched to place the warning signs of type 1 diabetes—excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss and exhaustion—in front of as many people as possible through strategic partnerships, volunteer advocates and PSAs encouraging the public to immediately see their healthcare provider for a blood glucose or urine test in an effort to avoid DKA at diagnosis.

About the Campaign
Since its launch in 2016, Beyond Type 1’s Warning Signs Campaign has been distributed in 25 states and territories to over 28,000 pediatric offices, serving over 90 million patients annually through partnerships with state chapters of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Based on this success, in 2020, Beyond Type 1 collaborated with the National Association of School Nurses and The Diabetes Link to place the warning signs of type 1 diabetes in front of audiences of all kinds. Supported by a generous grant from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, the Warning Signs Campaign has been distributed to tens of thousands of school nurses across the country as well as other organizations and local communities throughout the U.S. Additionally, with the support of 950 dedicated state volunteers, over 33,000 posters have been distributed in communities across the country. Global awareness efforts are rolling in Canada, Spain, Mexico, Argentina and New Zealand.
Special Thanks
We’d like to thank the dozens of volunteers across the US and abroad who have helped and continue to help us reach individuals everywhere with type 1 Warning Signs posters and materials.
This campaign would not be possible without the energy and tireless efforts of all parent/family advocates who have successfully championed the DKA awareness campaign within their home states and communities. Thank you!
