Beta Bionics Partners with Abbott to Integrate iLet Bionic Pancreas with FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus

 2024-09-05

Beta Bionics, a pioneering leader in diabetes-management technology, has announced a strategic partnership with Abbott to integrate their iLet Bionic Pancreas with Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus continuous glucose monitor (CGM).

This collaboration aims to simplify and enhance the way people with type 1 diabetes manage their condition.

What is the iLet Bionic Pancreas?

The iLet Bionic Pancreas is an innovative, autonomous insulin-delivery system designed to take the guesswork out of diabetes management.

Unlike traditional insulin pumps, the iLet does not require users to manually count carbs or calculate insulin doses. Instead, it uses real-time glucose readings from the FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus to automatically adjust insulin delivery throughout the day.

The only input required from the user is their weight, and the iLet handles the rest.

Sean Saint, CEO of Beta Bionics, emphasized the importance of providing choice and convenience to people with diabetes.

“Beta Bionics developed the iLet Bionic Pancreas to offer the type 1 community a way to manage their diabetes with less burden and more convenience,” says Saint. “This partnership with Abbott will enable us to offer a choice of iCGMs so users will be able to customize their iLet diabetes management experience with the CGM they know and trust.”

The iLet Bionic Pancreas pairs with the Dexcom G6 CGM, which provides real-time glucose readings. This allows the iLet to automatically adjust insulin delivery based on current glucose levels.

The iLet Bionic Pancreas pairing with the Dexcom G6 and FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus offers flexibility, enabling users to choose from top CGMs for accurate glucose monitoring and personalized insulin delivery.

Jared Watkin, executive vice president of Abbott’s diabetes care business, highlighted the collaboration’s potential to improve the lives of people with diabetes.

“Abbott is dedicated to creating future-forward health technologies that simplify how people living with diabetes manage their condition and their overall health,”

When Will the iLet/Freestyle Libre 3 Pairing Be Available?

The integration of the iLet Bionic Pancreas with the FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus is expected to be available in the United States by Q4 2024.

When setting up the iLet, users will benefit from an easy software update that allows them to select their preferred CGM

The combined system will be available through pharmacies and durable-medical-equipment distributors, offering an innovative pay-as-you-go model for obtaining supplies.
