Beyond Scholars is more than just another way Beyond Type 1 supports the diabetes community—it’s a powerful program offering both tangible and intangible benefits to its college recipients.
Past scholars share how the program elevated their college experience, from emotional encouragement to financial support to peace of mind.
Kaitlyn V.
Beyond Scholars alum Kaitlyn V. recently graduated with a degree in Healthcare Policy at Cornell University, where the scholarship helped her chase her passion for healthcare reform.
On campus, she founded a chapter of The Diabetes Link, giving students with type 1 diabetes (T1D) a place to connect and support each other. “Just having a shared platform to share experiences and communicate… has been invaluable,” she said. Kaitlyn is keeping that momentum going by pursuing a Master of Health Administration to further her advocacy work.
Johnathan M.
Jonathan M. is a student at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH studying nursing with a theater minor, made possible with support from Beyond Scholars.
In addition to helping with tuition, the program has empowered him to fully dive into campus life—from acting in plays and serving as a campus guide to rocking out with his a cappella group. Jonathan is even leaning into a career in pediatrics, possibly focusing on diabetes.
Nikhita G.
Nikhita’s Beyond Scholars journey came full circle. Diagnosed with T1D at age 5, she grew up participating in clinical trials—sparking a passion for public health, global health and expanding access to diabetes tech.
With support from Beyond Scholars, she earned a double major in global health and biomedical engineering at Duke University. “Receiving the scholarship from Beyond Type 1 made it so much more real that people are out there that want to see me succeed and want to support me in my journey through life,” she said.
Now, Nikhita works on Dexcom’s behavioral science team, interviewing people about their experiences with diabetes.
