Mia Grewal is a shining example of resilience and determination. As a recipient of Beyond Type 1’s Beyond Scholars program, Mia balances college life while managing the unique challenges of living with type 1 diabetes.
What is Beyond Scholars?
The Beyond Scholars program, founded in 2008 as the Diabetes Scholars Foundation, offers scholarships to the diabetes community.
In 2018, Beyond Scholars became part of Beyond Type 1 and has awarded over $2 million in scholarships to students with diabetes.
Kristian Hurley, senior vice president, social impact & global advocacy at Beyond Type 1, emphasizes the challenge of pursuing education while managing a chronic illness.
“We are incredibly proud to offer resources to this talented and deserving class of graduates and the many alumni before them,” says Hurley.
Beyond Scholars’ Impact on Mia Grewal
Beyond Scholars has been a game-changer for Mia Grewal, who has had type 1 diabetes for nearly her entire life.
Mia described the moment she learned she had been selected for the program as surreal.
“To know that I was getting a scholarship to help with my college expenses was unreal,” she says. “I am forever grateful to Beyond Type 1 for providing money to further my college experience and ultimately aid me in obtaining the career I desire.”
For Mia, the Beyond Scholars scholarship is more than just financial assistance. It’s also validation of her journey and an opportunity to focus more on her personal and academic growth.
“This means everything,” she says. “It affirms my life experiences as a person with type 1 diabetes and takes a weight off my shoulders financially. With the money I’m saving, I can participate in more activities on campus and better manage my diabetes.”
Achieving Academic and Personal Goals with Dexcom G7 CGM Technology
The Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitor (CGM) has also been a vital tool in Mia Grewal’s daily life, helping her manage the demands of college.
“The Dexcom G7 sensor helps keep my glucose levels in range, so I don’t have to worry about treating highs or lows. This gives me time to study and focus on exams.”
The app, she adds, lets her easily check her glucose, reducing stress and allowing her to focus on academics.
The Dexcom G7 has also made Mia feel independent. Her family uses the Dexcom Follow app to stay informed, offering peace of mind. Mia’s mom advises other parents to use these tools for support and connection.
“It’s reassuring to know she’s within a satisfactory glucose range and not experiencing a diabetic emergency while at college,” says Mia’s mom. “The sensor and apps are great ways to support your child and stay connected to their well-being while giving them independence.”
Kasie Hoang: Balancing College Life and Diabetes Management
Kasie Hoang, a driven and talented college student, is another proud recipient of the Beyond Scholars program scholarship.
When Kasie learned she had been selected, she felt a mix of surprise and joy.
“I was surprised but also happy that I was able to receive this opportunity,” says Kasie. “It made me feel proud and that my hard work was worth it.”
For Kasie, the scholarship is more than just financial aid—it’s a form of encouragement.
“Diabetes requires constant attention, so receiving this scholarship means a lot to me. It will help me balance my schoolwork and manage my health more effectively.”
In addition to the scholarship, Kasie says the Dexcom G7 system has also been a game-changer.
“Since I’m more likely to have my phone with me, having the app makes it easier to monitor my glucose levels anywhere I go,” Kasie explained.
Living away from home, Kasie values the independence the Dexcom G7 offers.
“I no longer need to carry equipment for manual testing, making it more convenient.”
Kasie also shares her glucose data with her mom, forming a support system that keeps her on track.
With tools like the Dexcom G7 and support from the Beyond Scholars program, Kasie is achieving a balance between her health and her studies, setting a strong foundation for her future.
Nash Lister is another inspiring college student and recipient of the Beyond Scholars program scholarship.
For Nash, being selected for the scholarship was a moment of immense pride.
“I was wordless when I found out I was selected for the Beyond Scholars program,” he shared. “I was extremely proud to be recognized and excited to make the diabetes community proud.”
This Beyond Scholars scholarship holds special meaning for Nash, not only for its financial support but also for its connection to the diabetes community.
“In college, I have met a surprising number of people with type 1 diabetes, and it makes me exponentially more proud to have received this scholarship and be a person with diabetes,” he said.
Nash, too, uses the Dexcom G7 to help navigate college life with type 1 diabetes.
“College is always go-go-go, and there is never enough time to fully dedicate myself to checking my glucose levels,” Nash explained. “The Dexcom CGM allows me to instantly know what my glucose levels are and how I need to correct them without missing any of the fun.”
Living independently, Nash also uses the G7 to share glucose data with his family and friends.
This, he says, ensures an extra layer of support.
“They are constantly checking on me to make sure my glucose levels are in check and give me reminders during times I’m focused on schoolwork or other activities,” Nash said.
For Nash, the Dexcom G7 has been a tool that provides balance, helping him focus on his academic and personal goals while staying in control of his diabetes management.
Inspiring Stories of Resilience
Mia, Kasie, and Nash are not only excelling in their academic pursuits but also thriving in their personal lives.
