Beyond Scholars

 2023-06-06

Note: The 2024 Beyond Scholars applications will open Monday, March 11th. More details to come!

Beyond Scholars is aimed at empowering success through education for people living with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Originally founded as the Diabetes Scholars Foundation in 2008, the goal was that—in this one small area of life—diabetes could be an advantage. In 2018, the Diabetes Scholars became a program of Beyond Type 1, offering scholarships of up to $5,000 for T1Ds entering college.

“Pursuing post-secondary education is no small or inexpensive feat, especially if you are a student living with a chronic illness like type 1 diabetes,” said Beyond Type 1’s Senior Vice President of Programs, Advocacy and Health Equity Kristian Hurley. “Between the rising cost of tuition, class materials, the general cost of living and affording the day-to-day management of their disease, programs like Beyond Scholars are pertinent to students weighing the cost of their education. We are incredibly proud to offer resources to this talented and deserving class of grads, and the many alumni before them.”

Beyond Scholars has provided more than $2 million in scholarship money since 2008. Scholarships are made possible by individual and corporate donors. If you’d like to support future classes of Beyond Scholars, please consider making a contribution here

Class of 2023

In 2023, Beyond Type 1 received more than 1,000 applicants, more than double last year, illuminating the increasing urgency to support students living with type 1 diabetes.

Twenty-four graduating high school students that live with type 1 diabetes from across the U.S. have been awarded scholarships of up to $5,000 from Beyond Scholars.

These scholarships are made possible by individual donors and partner organizations committed to supporting the path to higher education and students living with type 1 diabetes.

Congratulations to the 2023 Class of Beyond Scholars!
