Meet 2023 Diabetes Scholar Caleb H
Beyond Type 1 is honored to highlight the 2023 Class of Diabetes Scholars, which make up our future doctors, nurses, policymakers, educators, pilots, athletes and more!
Read this Q+A to get to know more about one of our 24 recipients this year and Caleb’s aspirations and hopes for college.
What are your favorite hobbies?
Mountaineering has had a deep effect on me. Through exploring the natural world I’ve developed a deep appreciation and respect for our environment and its conservation.
The challenges presented have also afforded me the opportunity to further learn about myself and my diabetes. It was actually through a friend with type 1 diabetes (T1D) that I was inspired to become involved in mountaineering; our community has the power to influence lives which I find to be beautiful.
What are you most looking forward to in college?
I can’t wait to become involved in the many communities at my college—to try new things, overcome new obstacles and meet new people. I am also very excited to become involved in science research.
Research has always been an important part of my life and it is especially important and prominent in the lives of us as diabetics. I am extremely excited and grateful for the opportunity to contribute to diabetes research.
What advice do you have for anyone getting ready for college with T1D?
Find community. Accomplishments are never truly our own; we owe it to the many people who invest in us by teaching, sharing and providing the resources we need to succeed.
As such, it is imperative that one becomes part of communities, both to reach full personal potential as well as to afford opportunities to others. It is from the people around us that we can draw motivation and inspiration; it is through the people around us that we are able to make an impact.
We’re all very excited for these bright Scholars, so make sure to learn more about the rest of the class of 2023.
