If you have type 1 diabetes, a new study shows that the iLet Bionic Pancreas (an automated insulin delivery (AID) system) could help you improve your blood sugar levels—even without an in-person doctor visit.
A simple solution for more people
In the past, the iLet Bionic Pancreas was only tested in diabetes specialty clinics.
This study, however, observed 40 adults with type 1 diabetes who got care from either an endocrinologist or a primary care doctor—some in person and some via telehealth.
The results?
- While a small study, nearly all (97%) of the participants kept their average glucose below 183 mg/dL
- 64% kept their average glucose under 154 mg/dL
- Similar outcomes were seen in iLet’s Real World Data results
Takeaway: Whether you have access to an endocrinologist or diabetes specialist or are seeing a primary care provider for your diabetes care, you can benefit from this system. Your regular doctor may be able to help you get started, even through a virtual visit.
Fully automated insulin dosing
The iLet Bionic Pancreas is the first insulin pump that allows users to provide general sizes of meals rather than specific carbohydrate counts.
It adjusts automatically based on your needs, which can make diabetes management easier.
The study showed that people using the system had lower average blood sugar levels compared to those using their usual care.
Takeaway: This system can take the guesswork out of insulin dosing, helping you keep your blood sugar in a better range.
Expanding access to better diabetes care
One big challenge in diabetes care is access.
Many people with type 1 diabetes rely on primary care doctors instead of specialists.
This study found that primary care doctors—whether in person or via telehealth—can successfully help people start using the iLet Bionic Pancreas.
Takeaway: If you have trouble seeing a diabetes specialist, talk to your primary care doctor about automated insulin delivery systems like the iLet Bionic Pancreas.
It may be easier to access than you think.
