Dexcom, a manufacturer of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors, recently announced that it will stop producing the G6 model of their CGM system starting July 1, 2026

While supplies may be available through your pharmacy or local medical distributor for a while afterwards, Dexcom cannot guarantee availability of the G6 after July 1 and is encouraging everyone who uses the G6 to work with their doctor to upgrade to the G7 as soon as they can.

All current G6 users have been notified of the transition via email.

Dexcom states that this decision was made so the company can better focus on innovation and introducing better and more accurate sensors to the market moving forward.

Compared to the G6, Dexcom’s G7 and G7 15 Day are smaller in size, have a shorter warm-up period, and are shown in clinical studies to have better glucose level accuracy. G7 sensors also work with a variety of automated insulin delivery (AID) systems and smart pens.

Every patient on a G6 will be upgraded to a G7 system.

How to upgrade to a G7 ahead of the discontinuation of the G6:

  • Patients will need to ask their doctor for a prescription for the G7.
  • For many people with insurance, CGMs are covered through pharmacy benefits, so an updated prescription should go to your pharmacy.
  • For others with insurance, CGMs are fulfilled through Durable Medical Equipment (DME) distributors. These users should contact their medical distributor directly to get started.

If you have questions, you can reach out directly to Dexcom support for help.

If your insurance has covered your G6 system, they will most likely cover a G7 system, but for help with checking insurance coverage, you may call Dexcom at 1-866-448-0097.

If you are facing a high out-of-pocket cost, Dexcom’s savings program may help

If you have questions about whether the G7 or G7 15 Day sensor is right for you, talk with your healthcare provider.
