Last week, the FDA gave 510(K) clearance to the first needle-free wearable, Biolinq Shine, that can track glucose, sleep and activity all in a single device. This builds on Biolinq’s De Novo classification from the FDA last fall, which established a new regulatory category for wearable, needle-free metabolic biosensors.
What does FDA 510(k) clearance mean?
Similar to FDA approval, an FDA 510(K) clearance applies to moderate-risk (class II) medical devices that are not life-sustaining. This clearance gives the green light on the Biolinq Shine, meaning it is safe and effective for wide-scale use.
Available without a prescription, this expands access to key components of metabolic health that can improve not only glucose levels but overall well-being for millions of people, including people living with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes who don’t use insulin.
“This clearance represents an important evolution in how people can access glucose information to build greater awareness of their metabolic health,” said Amy VandenBerg, chief regulatory and clinical officer at Biolinq. “The FDA conducted a thorough and rapid review of our submission, and we appreciate the agency’s rigor and engagement throughout the process.”
How does Biolinq Shine work without a needle?
The Biolinq Shine uses semiconductor-based microsensors that sit just below the skin’s surface, so no needle is needed for placement. It’s also the first glucose sensor with an integrated primary display that works with and without a phone. You wear it on your forearm, and the patch uses a color-coded LED to display glucose changes in real time and let you know when your glucose is within, above or below the target range.
With an optional companion app, you can get key insights into how your food, sleep and movement affect your blood glucose levels throughout the day.
Who can use Biolinq Shine?
The use of this device is intended for adults aged 22 and older who are not on insulin. This device is intended to provide glucose range information and to help support more general awareness about glucose trends, but it’s not meant to be used for medical decision-making, including insulin dosing or medication adjustments.
Biolinq Shine is meant to be used if you:
- Are at least 22 years old
- Do not take insulin
If you use insulin, you’ll want to use an FDA approved continuous glucose monitor (CGM) prescribed by your healthcare provider (HCP).
Being able to see how movement, food and sleep affect glucose levels is a game changer. And by removing the need for a prescription, the Biolinq Shine can help millions of people who are motivated to make lifestyle changes now, without having to go through a HCP or insurance company first.
Why does OTC access matter?
Without the need for a prescription, this new class of needle-free biosensors expands access to key components of metabolic health, whether you’re just looking to stay healthy or working with your HCP to meet your health goals.
“We believe health technology should make important insights simple, accessible and useful in everyday life,” said Rich Yang, chief executive officer of Biolinq. “This clearance brings that vision closer. By making Biolinq Shine available without a prescription, we can help more people understand how daily choices affect metabolic health and inspire a broader shift toward continuous biosensing as a foundation for healthier living.”
Removing the prescription barrier means you can start making lifestyle changes now, without losing momentum by having to go through your HCP or insurance company first. Biolinq has yet to announce when Biolinq Shine will be available for purchase.
