Managing type 2 diabetes with insulin can be challenging, but a new study shows the Omnipod 5 can help.
The Omnipod 5 is a small, tubeless automated insulin delivery (AID) system. It pairs with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) to automatically adjust basal insulin levels throughout the day and night.
This means fewer manual insulin adjustments, fewer highs and lows, and less stress about blood sugar management.
How well did it work?
According to a JAMA study, researchers tested Omnipod 5 on 305 adults with type 2 diabetes who were using insulin.
After 13 weeks, they saw improvements:
- Lower A1C: Participants’ average A1C dropped 0.8 percentage points, bringing them closer to the recommended range.
- More Time in Range: Before Omnipod 5, users spent 45% of the day in range; with it, that rose to 66%.
- According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) the recommended time in range (TIR) for individuals using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is:
- At least 70% of the time within the target range of 70-180 mg/dl.
- Safe to Use: Only one severe low blood sugar event was reported, and there were no cases of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
Why this matters for you
If you have type 2 diabetes and take insulin, this technology could help you:
✅ Automatically adjust insulin based on real-time glucose levels
✅ Reduce the need for finger pricks when paired with a CGM
✅ Spend more time in a healthy blood sugar range
✅ Make diabetes management simpler and more convenient
What’s next?
- Omnipod 5 was first cleared by the FDA for people with type 1 diabetes in 2022.
- The FDA expanded its approval in 2024 to include adults with type 2 diabetes using insulin.
- This followed Insulet’s research (maker of OmniPod 5) that broadened labeling for type 2 diabetes in adults 18 and older.
- This means more people can now access this technology to help manage their blood sugar with less effort.
- If you take insulin for type 2 diabetes, talk to your doctor to see if Omnipod 5 or another automated insulin delivery (AID) system could be a good option for you.
- These systems may help reduce highs and lows, improve A1C, and make daily diabetes management easier.
