Meet Brian—first year medical student, peanut butter enthusiast, person with type 1 diabetes (T1D) since 2017 and Dexcom G6 user. 

What inspired you to join the team?

I joined the Beyond Type Run team because I wanted to meet with other like-minded people who are managing the same condition, who could give me insight on how to better manage T1D.

What’s in your diabetes management toolkit?

I use a Tandem t:slim X2 insulin pump and a Dexcom G6 to manage my diabetes.

I never go on a run without …

I never go on a run without my Dexcom, concentrated sports drinks and a few snacks.

What is your favorite low snack on a run?

I love Honey Stingers and Clif Bloks!

What is your pump it up running song?

It all depends on my mood!

What has been your most helpful tool as you’ve trained?

The most helpful tool I’ve used for training has been my Dexcom G6 Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) to manage my blood sugar in real time.

What has been the biggest training hurdle?

My biggest training hurdle has been trying to incorporate running with my hectic schedule.

What is your most embarrassing running moment?

I’ve almost tripped several times when running early in the morning.

The injury I’m currently nursing is . . .

My feet constantly hurt, but Oofos have helped quite a bit!

If you could go on a run with any T1D hero who would it be?

If I could go on a run with any T1D hero, I would choose to go with Sonia Sotomayor.

How do you treat yourself / recover after a long run?

Lots of peanut butter!

What are you most nervous about the day of the marathon?

I’m nervous about hitting my wall at mile 20 with only 10K until the finish.

How are you going to celebrate at the end of the race?

By going back to studying for my Host Defense exam that’s less than five days later.
