About Beyond Type 1

Beyond Type 1 was founded in 2015 by Juliet de Baubigny, Nick Jonas, Sarah Lucas and Sam Talbot. Beyond Type 1 is a new brand of philanthropy leveraging the power of social media and technology, changing what it means to live with Type 1 diabetes. By educating the global community about this chronic, autoimmune disease, as well as providing resources and support for those living with Type 1, Beyond Type 1 bridges the gap from diagnosis to cure, empowering people to both live well today and to fund a better tomorrow. 100% of every dollar raised directly supports the most promising global efforts and programs working to educate, advocate and cure Type 1 diabetes.

Beyond Type 1 is a registered 501(c)3.

Nick was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of thirteen. The multi-platinum selling recording artist, talented actor and philanthropist continues to support charitable causes that are close to his heart while encouraging youth to follow their dreams in spite of their struggles. He has served as an advocate for a variety of important issues, including health and education for our youth, human rights and most notably diabetes.

Juliet’s son Nicolas was diagnosed with Type 1 in 2012 at the age of five. Juliet joined Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers in 2001, and as a partner works with the firm’s portfolio companies on areas of human capital. She has served on numerous national and international non-profit boards and campaigns, most notably Product (RED).

Sarah’s daughter Mary was diagnosed with Type 1 in 1998 at the age of seven. An event designer, writer and lifestyle expert with a passion for philanthropy, she has raised over $10 million for Type 1 charities over the past 15 years. She has served on the board of several Bay Area and national organizations focused on youth, health and education.  In addition to being a co-founder, Sarah serves as the CEO of Beyond Type 1.

Sam was diagnosed with Type 1 at the age of 12. A star in the culinary world, he has turned his love for food into an innovative career, opening several restaurants and participating in season 2 of Top Chef, where he was named “Fan Favorite.” He serves as a role model to adults and children alike by applying his “all-natural” style of cooking to every recipe.

With a focus on education, advocacy, and the path to a cure, Beyond Type 1 has developed a broad ranging portfolio of grantees and programs aimed at improving the lives of people impacted by T1D. 100% of every dollar raised goes back to the Type 1 community, because our Founders + Founding Friends pay all operational and fundraising expenses.

By establishing a supportive community via powerful social media people are connected on a global scale in a new way. Our Instagram campaign “Living Beyond,” showcases the age, range and variance of those living their best life with T1D, and our Beyond Type 1 Daily will keep you updated on all things Bt1.

Our Snail Mail Club connects T1Ds all over the world as pen pals. Currently in 50 different countries with nearly 4,000 participants aging from 1 to 80 years old, the program fosters a global community of support for those living with Type 1. With Percy as its mascot, an insulin pump toting snail, the program encourages both children and adults to share their stories. The simple exchange of letters and experiences creates lasting friendships that help ease the burden of T1D management.

Together, we’re creating the largest collection of practical ideas, stories and resources for not only living, but thriving with Type 1. We’re stronger together with over 12,000 members from more than 100 different countries in the Beyond Type 1 app. People can share stories, read accounts from the community, ask questions, participate in polls, troubleshoot and be a part of a collective that offers both inspiration and support. Some of the main topics we cover are burnout, parenting, stress management, being newly diagnosed, sex, drugs & rock ‘n roll.

Education is the key to spreading awareness and changing current misconceptions as to what Type 1 is and how it is managed. Whether your child with Type 1 wants to talk to his or her classroom or entire school, we have printed materials and a power point presentation that explains what Type 1, how it’s treated and even which celebrities have it. We have just launched a #LivingBeyond session for Type 1 diabetes camps as well that encourages youth to embrace their diagnosis and live a healthy life with a positive outlook.
